What are the Causes of Acne?

Causes of acne are determined through various ways. Acne becomes apparent during puberty stage. This is considered to be the most common stage where acne is evidently seen as many changes in the body occur.

Although there are many myths about acne, the following are the major causes of acne:

  • Genetics
Parents who have acne problems are tend to have babies with acne problems too. Genes carry the information from parents and past to their kids. Since it is inherited genetically, this acne cause cannot be avoided.
  • Hormones
The body normally produces testosterone during teenage years. Testosterone is a kind of hormone which causes the skin to produce oil. This natural oil can oftentimes impede dead skin cells that paved the way for the oil to merge and bind together as it remains in the pores causing pimples and blackheads. Hormonal changes during period or when you start or stop taking birth control pills can also cause an acne flare-up. In some cases, however, certain birth control pills are prescribed as a treatment for acne.
  • Stress
Stress might not be a cause of acne but it will potentially worsen your acne problem or any other skin problems you may have.
  • Diet
Dermatologists still unsure whether our diet is a cause of acne. However, some experts believe that food allergies would lead to acne outbreaks.
  • Extremely washing your face
Washing your face too often can aggravate the skin,  resulting in the occurrence of acne.
  • Greasy or oily skin care products and cosmetics
Oily products will clog the oil ducts and increase the chances for acne to occur.
  • Medications
Acne can be a side effect of some drugs, including barbiturates, seizure medication and steroids.
  • Plugged oil ducts
The cells that line the oil ducts in the skin are always larger for individuals who are prone to acne. This will produce more oil and the ducts get plugged. Plugged ducts trap the oil and leads to the formation of blackheads or whiteheads. Plugged ducts also allow germs in the skin to multiply and produce chemicals that are causes of acne. This is why simple blackheads and whiteheads may turn red and bumpy and turn into acne.

There are also some mistaken believes about the causes of acne. Here are some causes that are plainly myths:

  • Acne is only associated with people having an oily skin
But it is not. Any person with any skin types can acquire this kind of skin problem. A skin whether it is dry, sensitive, and oily can be stricken by acne.
  • Acne is caused by the food you eat
But it is not. The intake of chocolates and other greasy foods do not have direct connection to the origins of acne. Although it is imperative to eat good and healthy foods still, this kind of delusion does not provide factual information.
  • Acne is caused by dirt
But it is not. The black plug in a blackhead is caused by a chemical reaction.
  • Acne is contagious
But it is not. Acne won't spread from one to another people.
  • Acne is caused by sexual thoughts or masturbation
But it is not. Though it can be a cause of hormonal unbalance, it’s not proven to directly cause acne.
